Admired for its rugged windswept cliffs, crashing waves, majestic redwoods, and expansive beaches, Big Sur has been an inspiration to many artists and visitors who travel to the area. Many people make the trip to Big Sur along Highway 1, perhaps one of the most scenic drives in California.
The heavy winter storms of this year have caused massive mudslides which have wreaked havoc on the area and its aging bridges. On the 320-foot-long Pfeiffer Canyon bridge the eroded hillsides caused the support columns for the bridge to weaken and eventually crack which caused the bridge to buckle, leaving this part of Big Sur cut in half.
Crews are hard at work repairing this stretch of Highway 1 but visitors to the area still won’t be able to drive the entire length of Highway 1 until a new bridge is built. The good news is, Big Sur is still accessible through a detour route which is full of beautiful views, historic attractions and incredible wine.
