San Carlos Cathedral

Catch A Glimpse Of History At The San Carlos Cathedral

As the oldest continuously functioning church and the first stone building in the State of California, the San Carlos Cathedral is an iconic landmark in Monterey. During a comprehensive restoration, which started in 2006 and went on for three years, many artifacts were discovered that shed light upon the early history of the Presidio of Monterey.

The artifacts are now on display in the heritage center located next to the church. Today, the San Carlos Cathedral is the only presidio chapel in California and the only existing building in the original Monterey Presidio. With an illustrious legacy that dates back to the 18th century, the church stands as a stately witness to the history of this vibrant coastal city.
