Celebrate America 250 in Historic Monterey
There's a quiet irony to celebrating America's 250th birthday in Monterey. While the founding fathers were debating independence on the East Coast in 1776, Spain had just named Monterey the capital of both Baja and Alta California that same year. This city was already old by American standards, already layered with history, already a place people fought over and sailed toward and built lives around.
Which is part of what makes it such a compelling place to be right now.
The Monterey State Historic Park spans the old town district with 17 restored buildings, among them the Custom House, the state's First Theater, and the hall where California's first constitution was drafted. The Custom House holds the title of California State Historic Monument #1, the oldest government building in the state, sitting right at the entrance to Old Fisherman's Wharf. These aren't replicas. They're the actual buildings.
By 1842, as American settlers moved steadily into California, the U.S. established its first and only consulate here, with Thomas Larkin serving as America's sole consul to California. The country's westward story runs directly through this town.
What's happening in 2026
The national celebration peaks around July 4th. America250 has organized a five-day celebration from July 1 through 5, with fireworks, concerts, and community gatherings nationwide, including America's Block Party on July 3rd and 4th. Monterey is a natural place to anchor that kind of trip: close enough to the Bay Area to pair with other stops, distinctive enough to be a destination on its own.
Later in the summer, Monterey Car Week runs August 7 through 16, drawing rare and exotic cars to venues across Monterey County, including the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It's one of those events that sounds niche until you're standing in the middle of it.
Then in September, the Monterey Jazz Festival does something that feels made for this year. Three-time Grammy-winning bassist and singer-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello will debut a commissioned piece called "America 250" on the Jimmy Lyons Stage at 7:15pm on Saturday, September 26, written specifically to commemorate the nation's semiquincentennial. The festival has been running continuously since 1958, making it the longest-running jazz festival in the world. This commission will be one of the more memorable moments in its history.
